Makalani Kulihaʻapai is the Kumu hula (hula instructor) of Hālau Hula O Makalani Nā Pilialoha. She comes to us from Papakōlea, located on the beautiful island of O’ahu. Makalani has been dancing hula competitively and recreationally her entire life. She was trained on O'ahu under Kumu Hula, Pinky Ohelo, and is honored to be currently studying under the direction of world renowned Kumu Hula "Lehua" Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett and Kumu Ula Hewett. She joyfully shares with her haumāna (students) the knowledge that has been passed down to her by her Kumu. Makalani takes great pride in perpetuating the Hawaiian culture through the language, customs, and traditions of the Hawaiian people. |
"The most important thing is to have a kahua or foundation that links you to the generation before you to connect with the generations into the future. The relationship between student and teacher is a lifelong relationship that is based on trust, honor, and loyalty—to the school of learning and to the teacher..." ~ Kumu & Kahuna Kawaikapuokalani Frank Loea Lehua Hewett
